Our Mission Statement
Windy City Dragon Boat Club (WCDBC) promotes the amateur sport of dragon boating to people of all ages at a recreational and competitive level by:
Developing teamwork and friendship within and between teams
Encouraging healthy athletic development, from beginner to advanced
Promoting awareness of the Club and sport
Supporting Lake Arlington, the community and each other
The Windy City Dragon Boat Club (WCDBC) started as Lincoln Park Boat Club in Chicago in 2009 as very first competitive dragon boat team in Chicago area. After winning our first American Championship in Chattanooga, TN and our success in racing around United States and Canada, Lincoln Park Boat Club felt the need to expand and grow.
In early 2012, the club purchased a dragon boat and moved to suburban Arlington Heights with Lake Arlington as a home base under the new name of Windy City Dragons. This new team won another national title in Fort Dodge, Iowa and attended its first Club Crew World Championships (CCWC) in Hong Kong the same year.
After returning from CCWC, another team was added to our family. The Windy City Black Dragons were formed and the club’s name was change to the Windy City Dragon Boat Club. Both teams were very successful racing in festivals and in the competitive sport division. Later in 2015, more members joined to form a womens team and the Windy City Lady Dragons was added to the family.
Windy City Dragon Boat Club is a Not-For-Profit organization, and as part of our community work, Windy City has developed a corporate program that provides coaching to new paddlers in the community. These corporate teams learn how to promote and develop their own new team members. Through our program, we help them to prepare for races involving corporate, college or family teams.

About Dragon Boating
A dragon boat is a watercraft powered by paddlers rhythmically paddling to the sound of a drum and steered from the helm with the oar by experience steersman. Dragon boating is a team paddling sport which has its roots in an ancient Chinese ritual that began over 2,500 years ago throughout China. Since the 1970s, dragon boating has spread all over the world and has become the fastest growing water sport with festivals and competitions held frequently all over the United States and globally. Dragon boats can hold 18-20 paddlers for standard size and 8-10 for small boats and each team includes a drummer and a steersman. Dragon boats are one of the most versatile forms of exercising and appeals to every level of fitness. It does not require any particular skills to start. We are here to help you get started!
